Rep. Paul Crowley certainly was not a well-known name on the University of Rhode Island campus, but his contributions to Rhode Island education in the state House of Representatives will always be remembered. Crowley, a Democrat from Newport and URI alumnus, died Sept. 24 from skin cancer.
The International Engineering Program at the University of Rhode Island had a lot to celebrate last Friday. The IEP program commemorated its 20 year anniversary and the opening of the new Texas Instruments student house in an outdoor ceremony behind the new building.
The University of Rhode Island's Fine Arts Department is opening a photography exhibit today called, "China seen by…," as a visual complement to the China Rising lectures in this year's honors colloquium. The exhibit is designed to be a contemporary presentation of Chinese photographical art today, which, according to URI history professor Timothy George, is in very high demand.
When Karen Stein started her career at the University of Rhode Island in 1970, women were treated much differently than they are today. She lived in a world where domestic violence was considered taboo. Tomorrow the director of the URI women's studies program will be recognized as one of three "Women of the Year" selected by the Rhode Island Commission on Women.
