02/27/04 - To the Cigar,
I just wanted to comment on Marcus Ross' ill-reasoned recent publication on same-sex marriage. I particularly would like to comment on these two quotes from Marcus' publication:
Marcus wrote, "What's to stop a 42-year-old man from "marrying" his 15-year-old boyfriend?" The law, Marcus, would stop such a silly thing. The age of consent is not abbrogated if and when RI permits same-sex marriage. But, did you know that until just several years ago, heterosexuals in some states could marry their 12 year-old girlfriends? For years such nonsense was permitted to heterosexuals....Why didn't you mention how upsetting that situation was and certainly would be? You're grasping at issues that don't exist to stop the inevitable, Marcus. Gay marriage will be a fact within the very near future.
Or, Marcus, you also said, "If the reasoning for allowing same-sex marriage is 'because I love them and they love me'....is 'shoddy reasoning.'" I'd like to know why heterosexuals marry. It can't because they love each other....I assume you think that is "shoddy reasoning," too.
Come on, Marcus, there are real issues out there for good conservatives to be concerned with. Who I sleep with or choose to marry certainly is not one of them, or is it?
