02/15/05 - The University of Rhode Island Foundation is currently accepting nominations from students and staff members who want to recommend someone who qualifies for the 2005 Excellence Awards.
"The students play a significant role when they voice their support for a particular teacher or a scholarly event," Robert Coleman, executive director of the URI Foundation, said.
The committees that select the winners look to students and faculty for a good basis of evaluation, he said.
The Excellence Awards are given in four categories: administrative, scholarly, staff and teaching. They began as a single award for teaching in 1970.
According to the advertisement, a candidate should be a person who goes above and beyond their responsibilities to enhance the objectives of a department and the university, and approaches their job with creativity, imagination, dedication and humanism.
Coleman talked about the nomination process, saying, "you can do it in a letter, you can do it in an e-mail ... it is very user-friendly."
The deadline for nominations is Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. Once all of the applications are in, the four Select Committees have a month to select the winners. Winners from the last two years comprise the committee along with two students.
"They have until March 25," Coleman said. "Then during the first week of April or so, President Carothers personally congratulates the winners."
Winners receive a framed certificate, $1000 dollars, and an excellence pin and are given the opportunity to march in the graduation ceremony.
"It's great to see the expression on the nominees' faces," Coleman said. "It's a compelling award ... it says to them, 'you are doing an excellent job, and your peers understand and appreciate what you do.'"
Coleman wanted to thank the Student Alumni Association, for being so helpful in the awards process
"It's been a very well coordinated activity," he said. "The SAA has certainly gone to great lengths to help us publicize the Excellence Awards."
Students and staff members who wish to submit e-mail can send it to jlewis@foundation.uri.edu or bring a letter to the URI Foundation Building located on 79 Upper College Road. Anyone with questions or comments can refer to http:://www.urifoundation.org awards or call 401-874-5273 for more information.
