03/23/05 - The North Kingstown Police Department arrested three men, including one University of Rhode Island student, on assault charges after a party last month where a 19-year-old West Greenwich man had to have his spleen removed due to injuries sustained during an incident at the party.

On Feb. 12, Daniel Morrow, 19, of West Greenwich, was hospitalized after being assaulted by three men at a party at the house of Jason Zina, 18, of 100 Grove Avenue, North Kingstown.

Jared Leonhardt, 19, of North Kingstown, Michael C. Elias, an 18-year-old University of Rhode Island student, and Zina were arrested on charges of felony assault. The three men were arraigned over the weekend and released on $3,000 personal recognizance, according to a Providence Journal article.

Two girls filed assault complaints with the North Kingstown Police Department four days after the party. According to the police report, Morrow, the two girls and another man arrived at Zina's house, where Zina allegedly punched Morrow in the face.

After the fight was temporarily broken up, everyone went outside, where Zina continued to kick Morrow according to witnesses. Elias joined in, kicking Morrow in the face and stomach with his boots, according to police reports.

Morrow eventually broke free with the help of a friend, and was taken to a friend's house whose mother was a nurse.

The following day, Morrow experienced trouble breathing and felt severe pain in his stomach area. He was taken to Kent County Hospital according to the police report. Doctors removed his spleen and treated him for internal bleeding.

According to the Journal article, North Kingstown Police Captain Thomas J. Mulligan said Morrow spent about a week in the hospital after the fight.

Mulligan said the fight may have been over a woman, but added this had not been confirmed.

Prior to the fight, North Kingstown Police made two visits to Zina's after complaints of underage drinking, according to Mulligan in the Journal article. At the time the officers were unaware of the party, but made everyone go home with the exception of four to six people who stayed to help clean up. Officers confiscated alcohol, but made no arrests or issued any fines.

The North Kingstown Police report states Morrow wishes to press charges against the three assailants. However, he must be contacted to confirm if he still wishes to press charges, according to the report.

The case remains under investigation, police said.

Zina, Elias and Leonhardt have an April 6 felony assault screening date at the attorney general's office, according to Mulligan.
