01/24/06 - Comedian Dane Cook's appearance at the University of Rhode Island last semester attracted more than 3,000 students. The Student Entertainment Committee described the Cook show as a "complete success," while other attendees had both positive and negative reviews.

Cook's performance, originally scheduled for Nov. 20, was delayed until Dec. 11. Even with the date change, tickets were sold out, including the returned tickets from students that could not attend the rescheduled performance. The show was open to the public as well as to URI students.

"Changing the date actually helped attract more students," SEC President of Special Events Sulina Mohanty said. "The [committee] members really worked hard to advertise."

Mohanty called Dane Cook's performance "one of the most successful events at URI," adding that Cook enjoyed the students' company.

As for the show itself, Mohanty said everything went very smoothly.

"There were no security problems, and everyone seemed to really enjoy the show," Mohanty said.

As for the students, their sentiments on Dane Cook ranged from excited to unimpressed.

"It was a great show and he was even funnier in person," freshman Chris Kunzmann said. "It was definitely worth the 14-hour campout the night before tickets went on sale."

Alyson Bacon, a freshman, added, "It was cool to see so many college kids laughing at every word out of Dane's mouth."

Some students were just happy to see Cook in the first place.

"I liked how he interacted with the audience," freshman Marissa Varin said.

Other students were disappointed with the lack of new jokes in Cook's dialogue or even found the first performer, Robert Kelly, funnier than Cook.

"The first half was slow but it picked up," freshman Marc Fernandez said.

"I liked the first guy better because we all knew Dane Cook's stuff," Neil McCormack, a senior, said. "His jokes were still funny, though."

"That's how comedians usually do it - it was expected," Mohanty said in response to the disappointed students.

Cook's last performance at URI took place in September 2003. A committee of approximately 30 students worked on Cook's December performance since the beginning of the school year. The show was booked in October.

Referring to another appearance by Cook at URI in the future, Mohanty said, "It's possible, but we're looking into other acts so there aren't as many repetitions."

Other acts SEC is considering include an appearance by Dave Chappelle, a performance by an international break dancing group, magicians and hypnotists.

The next event planned by SEC is a showing of the movie Waiting Tuesday, Jan. 31 in Edwards Hall. It is free and open to all students.
