09/27/06 - So apparently, Charles Barkley is a major recording star now. This is something that comes as a shock to me. I mean, I love his work on Inside the NBA, but I didn't think a hall of fame power forward had immense musical talent as well.
Barkley will bring his 23,757 points, 12,546 rebounds and platinum record St. Elsewhere to the Ryan Center Thursday, Sept. 27. Sir Charles will rock the house with his hit single, "Crazy."
I hope he does more than sing, since there are hoops setup in the Ryan Center. I would love to see him play a pickup game with the current Rhody Rams, like dunking over Jimmy Baron. I know he's like 300 pounds now, but I still think he could punish the Rams in the low post.
I also hope he tells some stories about his wild days in the NBA. My favorite Charles Barkley story is about when he got into a bar fight in 1997 and threw a guy through a plate glass window. When the police asked him if he had any regrets, Barkley said, "I regret we weren't on a higher floor."
As Cigar sports reporter Pat Oullette said when he heard that story, "Charles Barkley is the man." Sports editor Matt Pavao said, "I wish Charles Barkley threw me through a plate glass window." Production manager Michelle Kirms said he was her favorite basketball player growing up.
Barkley has a considerable amount of range. He's planning to run for governor of his home state of Alabama as an independent in 2014, once he re-establishes residency. He has also lost about $10 million from gambling, but hey, he's rich anyway. $10 million is just dirt on the shoulders for Sir Charles.
Barkley stars in an old basketball game, Barkley Shut Up and Jam! Available for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, I distinctly remember it being not as good as NBA Jam. Oh, and also, Sir Charles is one of the few players who can break the backboard in the arcade version of NBA Jam. That was really awesome.
He is also hilarious on Inside the NBA with Ernie Johnson and Kenny "The Jet" Smith. My favorite segment is when they show doctored photos of players Gone Fishin' during the playoffs. You can find clips of Barkley on YouTube playing "How you say that?" with Smith, which make my tummy feel warm with laughter.
Anyway, I'm not sure how well any of this translates to music. Barkley shares a birthday with Kurt Cobain, so I think that helps. He apparently wears a different costume for each performance, like from The Wizard of Oz, Donnie Darko and Star Wars. That's pretty awesome, and I think The Round Mound of Rebounding would make a great Chewbacca.
To sum up, I'm not sure how good Charles Barkley will be this Thursday at the Ryan Center, but I'd love to see him dunk. Oh yeah, it would also be fun to see him throw someone through a window. That would be cool.
