10/17/06 - The University of Rhode Island women's volleyball team was swept in both of its Atlantic 10 conference matches over the weekend to Dayton and Xavier.
Friday night Rhode Island lost to Dayton 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-26) on the road at Dayton, Ohio. In the third game the Rams had a 12-1 lead before the Flyers tied it at 24 and ultimately won 30-26. Sophomore libero Leslie Wiekamp led both teams in digs with 15 and senior outside hitter Inga Schlecht had nine kills to pace the team in addition to her six digs and three service aces.
Junior middle blocker Sara Phillips said that she was disappointed with the weekend but sees the losses as a learning experience.
"The more we play, the more we are going to learn about ourselves and play our best," she said. "Obviously we didn't play to our potential but it is within our grasp to succeed and beat these teams within our conference."
Rhode Island had a tough day again on Saturday in Cincinnati, Ohio, when it lost to Xavier 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-17). Senior Lindsay St. John led the team with 16 assists and six kills, senior outside hitter Rachel Bello tacked on seven kills and Wiekamp recorded 13 digs in the loss.
Wiekamp agreed with Phillips about the state of the team.
"I can see success down the road for us but we need to improve in all aspects of the game," she said. "The first thing we need to do is terminate the ball better and if we do that our hitting efficiency will improve and with that will come the winning."
Head coach Bob Schneck was impressed with the way Dayton played on Friday night.
"They are what I consider a 'for real' team, they swept a very tough team in Arizona 3-0 earlier in the season," he said. "Dayton also has a great player in Faye Barhorst, she is one of the best players I have ever seen."
"They are a step above everyone else in the conference, we had a chance after going up 12-1 in the third game but we made unforced errors to lose the game," Schneck said. "The crowd was also very hard to deal with, they were there early for Midnight Madness and it was a loud atmosphere."
Schneck was not happy with the team's performance against Xavier on Saturday.
"We did not play well at all, I felt as though we didn't show up," he said. "Xavier was so quick to the ball it was like playing in the backcourt with no block."
He added, "We played much better against Dayton than Xavier. Against George Washington and Charlotte this weekend we are going to have to win one game if we are going to be in the top six in A-10 because this is the only time we play both of them."
