11/17/06 - To the Cigar,

In response to the letter to the editor entitled, "College Republican ads only for shock value," (Nov. 16) I find that rather than promoting "gender equality," the writers reinforce the stereotype of women being weaker. In quoting from "Woman Against Gun Violence," a known gun control group with a specific agenda, the authors claim that a gun in the home is more of a danger than protection.

So, according to this logic, gun violence should increase with more honest citizens being armed. But when one compares crime rates in states with right to carry laws vs. those without, FBI data shows a 22 percent LOWER crime rate in states with such laws.

In a landmark study on violent criminals (Wright-Rossi, both from the Social and Demographic Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts) it was found that the biggest fear that violent criminals had was running into an armed victim. In fact, the vast majority of those surveyed (81 percent) would first try to find out if the intended victim is armed and 74 percent would avoid breaking into a home where people were armed.

There is only one thing that criminals consistently fear and that is an armed target. To deny these people the means of protection only benefits the criminal.
