12/07/06 - Have you ever heard of the bands Metagroove or Revisor? Well I certainly had not, but their lead singer Andrew Lipke has decided to go solo. His record company, Drexel University's MAD Dragon Records, has released a sample LP of his latest work.

Lipke is a true musician in the sense that he plays two instruments and writes his own music. He's unlike many currently popular musicians, because if you asked them what a key was, they would tell you that it was a thing used to open doors, instead of one of the fundamental principles of music.

It is also nice to see someone write their own music, since most artists sing lyrics written by others. But while it's nice that he can write his own music and play an instrument, this does not mean Lipke should put out a CD.

There is a tone to his music that I can't put my finger on. His vocals are clear and are actually pretty full, even when he goes up into the higher range of his voice. This isn't a trait he shares with many of today's male singers.

But at times he can be a little bit whiny, which is not a quality I particular like in a musician's voice. There is also just some thing in his voice that rubs me the wrong way, although I'm not quite sure what exactly it is.

Maybe Lipke should have stayed with his band and not tried the solo track, or maybe he should stay behind the scenes and write music for other musicians who can't write their own lyrics. Whatever he decides, he should definitely just stop the solo career, because it is just not working for him.
