Concert Review: Taking Back Sunday puts on great set despite bad crowd surfing

04/06/07 - You'd think that crowd surfing at a Taking Back Sunday show would go smoothly, but apparently for those who don't know me, my small 5'2" frame is simply too much to handle, or perhaps it was the mass amount of teenyboppers scattered throughout the newly renovated Washington Armory in Albany, N.Y.

Needless to say, I was dropped a couple times and was later passed into an open pit. It wasn't until the end of the night during the encore that a successful surf over the barrier was finally accomplished.

The venue itself embodied a slew of your average scene kids with plenty of black clothing, razored hair and matching Chucks to boot. Occasionally there was a pre-pubescent teen with a parent escort or the preppy guy who wore a concert tee to fit in.

Soon it was time for Armor For Sleep's opening act, a brief but excitement-inducing set that started things off on a good note.

Next came the hardcore, screaming animosity of Underoath, who by far had the most blinding light productions and rough crowd presence.

It was only as TBS took the stage that the crowd really surged forward and the volume swelled to an all-time high.

The first song of the set, "Liar (Takes One To Know One)," was possibly the best choice off prior album releases. You could feel the approval of the crowd as drummer Mark O'Connell hit the cymbals and guitar notes resonated through the speakers.

Front man Adam Lazzara had an odd crowd presence, as he asked the audience to echo his extended "Oh"s in the middle of the set. Your guess is as good as mine for his reasoning, let alone the exhausting manner in which he introduced fellow bandmates, O'Connell, guitarists Fred Mascherino and Eddie Reyes, and bassist Matt Rubano.

The rest of the set consisted of songs both new and old, like "What Does It Feel Like To Be A Ghost" and the Tell All Your Friends favorite "Cute Without The E (Cut From The Team)."

Encores included Louder Now's an acoustic "Divine Intervention," which has a beautiful harmonica solo, and the contagious first single release "Make Damn Sure."

Although the experience wasn't quite as invigorating as Green Day's American Idiot tour, Taking Back Sunday gave a decent effort, making the four-hour trek from Rhode Island worth the ass-numbing wait.
