09/19/07 - To the Cigar,
With 1,800 chapters and over 200,000 members nationwide, College Republicans are the most active and the largest student organization in the United States, successfully serving as the grassroots branch of the Republican Party while also bringing the conservative message to college campuses.
The reason for our size, our activity and our success in an environment hostile to our message is credited to the strong organization, effective management and the platform of College Republicans across the country, one that stands for something substantial instead of standing against things petty like College Democrats do.
At the University of Rhode Island, this nationwide scenario is even truer. In the Cigar on Monday, College Democrats Vice President Meg DeNobile incoherently rambles in an attempt to attack the recent fliers and calendar posting that College Republicans have released while advertising for our first meeting.
DeNobile conveniently skips the sections of our advertisement in where we quote leftist heroes like Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez and Sen. John Kerry (because she probably agrees with their radical leftist statements) and instead makes the petty argument that we are exaggerating our membership levels and activities.
With a mailing list of over 100 students and events that have framed the campus political debate while making news on local and national print and television including The New York Times and Fox News along the way for the last two years, the College Republicans are one of the largest and most active organizations on campus.
In calling us liars, it is DeNobile who could not be farther from the truth. Even worse, she is the last person who should be attacking another student group for membership levels. During the 2006-2007 school year, the College Democrats were virtually invisible to the student population, holding few or no events at all. Even recently the College Democrats did not participate in a 9/11 memorial/awareness event that the College Republicans organized with other groups on campus.
As the year goes on, College Republicans will continue to take firm positions on issues important to the day and will hold events that highlight those issues. In a polarized country where citizens deserve more than personal attacks from their political parties, we hope the College Democrats are actually visible on campus this year, not just in their words but also their actions.
