10/31/07 - Zombies and vampires are really two sides of the same horror movie coin. Both infect others by biting victims. Both crave human body parts or fluids - zombies want brains while vampires want blood. But all things considered, zombies are really the superior horror movie foe.

First of all, zombies can attack any time, whereas vampires cannot go out in the daytime. I'm not actually sure why they can't go out in the daytime, but it's a commonly accepted rule. While vampires are forced to hide out in a coffin in their castle during the day, zombies are out there working hard to find brains to eat.

In addition to not being able to go out in the day, vampires have numerous other weaknesses: garlic, crosses, holy water, silver bullets. They have some other odd rules too, like they can't enter a home without being invited in, they can't pass on holy ground, and they can't cross water.

Zombies have none of these problems. They go wherever they want. No one is going to invite a zombie into a house. So they just bust in and take some delicious brains. The only bullets that bother zombies are ones through the head, regardless of what they're made of.

Basically, there's only one way to kill a zombie: destroy its brain. It doesn't matter how you do it, but that is the only way to kill a zombie. You could cut a zombie in half with a chainsaw, but it would still come for you. That takes some heart. Compared to the variety of ways a vampire can be killed, zombies are obviously a more resilient enemy.

Zombies are also team players. They move in large groups. Rarely is there a lone zombie attacking because even they know that two non-functional brains are better than one. Vampires don't do that. They usually work solo and one vampire is significantly less terrifying or dangerous than an entire city of zombies.

Zombies aren't perfect though. They are really slow and really immobile. But so are tanks. So really, a zombie is just a rotten, flesh eating, brain- dead tank. Zombies are also stupid, being brain-dead and all. A zombie can be easily distracted by fire or something else loud or bright. They can be easily outsmarted and are really only effective when they attack in large numbers. I think most people could take a zombie down one-on-one.

Vampires on the other hand, have been shown to be highly intelligent, are very quick and even have the ability to fly. Vampires can also disguise themselves as regular human beings in order to trick them.

Zombies won't be mistaken for living people and don't have the smarts to disguise themselves. It's hard to stay undercover when the only word you can say is "BRAAAAAINS."

Still, despite all this, I think zombies are scarier and are all around better evil beings. It might be because I live in the city and not in Transylvania or near any large gothic castles.

Zombies, for me, are much more of an immediate fear (although I am thoroughly prepared for a zombie attack). But in all fairness, zombies are inherently screwed as long as their nemesis roams the earth. And as far as I know, Bruce Campbell is still alive.
