11/15/07 - The University of Rhode Island women's hockey team split a pair of games this past weekend.
On Saturday the Rams defeated Plymouth State University, 7-2, in Plymouth, N.H. On Sunday they lost to Norwich University, 4-1, in Northfield, Vt.
Head coach Beth McCann said she was pleased with the team's performance on Saturday. Currently, the team's record is four wins, two losses and one tie.
"We played well even though we were missing a few players due to sickness," she said. "We felt like the result of the game showed how well we played."
The team's seven goals were the most since putting up 16 goals in the first game of the season against the University of Connecticut. URI has outscored its opponents 31-12 this season.
Division III Plymouth State proved to be an easier opponent than Norwich, the second Division III opponent Rhode Island faced during the weekend.
"It was disappointing, we hadn't lost to them in five years," McCann said.
She added, "They weren't out of our reach, we outplayed them in the first period, played even with them in the second period, but lost our legs in the third period."
Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the first, but surrendered a goal to Norwich in the second period. Norwich outscored URI 3-0 in the final period, handing Rhody its second loss of the season.
"After we went ahead 1-0, we kind of disappeared," McCann said. "The team was worn down from an extremely physical Plymouth State game."
This weekend Rhode Island will host the American Collegiate Hockey Association Showcase Tournament. Seven teams will be competing, including URI, Liberty University, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Nichols College, Penn State University, Lindenwood University, and University of Colorado at Boulder.
"Our schedule in the showcase is very strong," McCann said. "Right now we are focusing on what we need to do, and I feel the team is getting stronger."
The ACHA Showcase will start Friday and last through Sunday. A total of 13 games will be played during the three-day span, with six of the games occurring on Saturday.
"This tournament will be to showcase women's ice hockey," McCann said. "With these Division I ACHA teams, the level of play is competitive."
Rhode Island will be participating in four of the 13 weekend games. It will play Friday versus Lindenwood, Saturday versus Colorado, Saturday versus Penn State, and Sunday versus Liberty.
According to McCann, Rhody is ranked third in the national poll. This weekend it will face some good competition, as it will play second-ranked Lindenwood and fourth-ranked Liberty. McCann said she was "very proud" of the team's stand in the ranking.
