02/06/08 - To the Cigar,

"The housekeepers are mixing the recycling back into the trash" is a complaint heard frequently by the University of Rhode Island Recycling, but nothing could be further from the truth.

It's all about perception. Housekeeping carts have one large section for trash. URI has many of these carts. When recycling was mandated for Rhode Island state agencies 20 years ago, housekeeping staff across the state had to figure out ways to recycle without buying new carts. So, a system was devised to use three clear trash bag liners in the single trash section of the cart.

All custodial staff at URI recycle. Last month, the library recycled 1,684 pounds of mixed paper and beverage containers. The Kingston and Narragansett Bay campuses recycled 25,890 pounds of mixed paper, mixed beverage containers and corrugated cardboard last month.

When you see a housekeeper emptying recycling bins, look closely. Have a conversation. Find out the truth for yourself. And make sure to say: "Thank you for recycling."

So please make sure your recyclable materials are placed into the appropriate container. They will be recycled, guaranteed!

As always, URI Recycling welcomes your comments, questions and concerns. Please contact us at recycle@etal.uri.edu or 874-2840. And, thank YOU for recycling.
