JumpStart is a program that involves college students with at-risk preschoolers to give them an edge in literacy as they begin their education. At URI, there are 70 participants in the part-time program, run by AmeriCorps.

JumpStart volunteers have performed more than 19,000 hours of community service in Providence, South Kingstown and Westerly schools. The program also grants six to 12 credits in the form of Community Service 302 during two semesters of classes.

Lynne Finnegan, the senior site manager for JumpStart at URI, is not at all shocked that JumpStart has been so effective. "We are an involved campus anyway, and that's why Jump Start is successful," Finnegan said.

In a press release, David Eisner, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, said, "College students like those at URI are tackling the toughest problems in America, demonstrating their compassion, commitment and creativity by serving as mentors, tutors, health workers and even engineers."
