04/29/08 - The women's rowing team followed up its first-ever win at the Atlantic 10 Championships last week with a win against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"I think they rowed OK," head coach Shelagh Donohoe said. "I don't think it was their best race. I think they did what they needed to do to get their bow first."
The University of Rhode Island won two races with the Varsity 8 boat, winning its event with a time of 7:13.01 and the URI A boat finishing first in the Varsity four event with a time of 8.13.21.
The team wasn't at its best against MIT, but Donohoe was happy to see it still get the job done.
"It's funny because the A-10s were last week and this week coming up is the ECAC's [Eastern College Athletic Conference] which is a big weekend for us," Donohoe said. "I think they could have done a better job but they went out and won so they did what they needed to do, but I think they will need to race better this weekend."
The Rams will take on their next big challenge next week in New Jersey at the ECAC Championships. With one championship already under the team's belt, Donohoe is expecting a tough event in New Jersey.
"We're racing a couple of schools that we lost against in the regular season, Bucknell [University] and [University at] Buffalo," Donohoe said. "I think we have some better speed, found better speed since then, but the other teams could have found more speed, too. We're gonna have to have very good speed to come back with the ECAC Championship."
