09/04/08 - College means a variety of different things to different students. For some of you, the University of Rhode Island is now your home. Some students can't imagine living without Butterfield Dining Hall in the morning with its heavenly Belgian waffles, impromptu Frisbee on the Quadrangle, or that professor that, within the duration of just one class, inspired you to take on the world in a new light.

For transfers and incoming freshmen, however, URI means something different. It might strike up the image of a long, painful battle cry against the giant hill that encompasses the Kingston campus. For others, it might mean your first step toward complete independence.

But there remains one thread that holds the campus community together, whether you're a freshman, junior or a "super senior:" change.

College is the time for not only igniting change across the campus community, but also within yourself.

Many of you are coming here and starting fresh. Not to go completely "Madonna" on you, but let's face it - college is the time to reinvent your lifestyle and take advantage of the greatest source of opportunity that you will ever have - academically and socially speaking.

There are more than 12,000 undergraduate students alone who attend the university, with almost half of them living on campus. You have access to the largest, most diverse group of people that you will probably ever encounter in your lifetime.

And what's more, you have a large assortment of faculty brains to pick. Take advantage of the knowledge and the resources on campus.

Countless students drive down Upper College Road for the first time as a communications major and drive back for the last time as a senior and a biology major. Taking a slew of courses in different subject areas can spark your interest in a future you'd never even thought about.

And sometimes, students just need a break from the grind. The best way to take a break between chapters in your pharmacy textbook is to study your lines for Theater 111! Take another class that has nothing to do with your major and have fun with it.

Maybe you have a passion for foreign affairs. In that case, take up PSC 116: International Politics if that's what tickles your fancy.

Take classes that interest you and make the best of your experience at URI.

Go rogue. Go Vogue. Make your own way.
