09/10/08 - The Rams women's volleyball team improved to 4-3 with a victory over the Eagles of Boston College last weekend.
Saturday set the stage for a thrilling game between two evenly matched teams. After coming off a tough loss in five sets to the University of South Carolina, the Rams were poised to win.
"After a tremendous effort the night before against South Carolina, we felt we were better matched up against Boston College," said Rams head coach Bob Schneck.
Junior Caitlyn Welsh led the way with a good performance, gathering 18 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Lauren McIntosh also played well, with 14 kills and an incredible .520 kill percentage. Senior Peggy Doino anchored the defense, tallying 27 digs throughout the match.
The match was back-and-forth the whole way in what ended up being an exciting victory for the Rams.
URI came out strong, beating BC 25-16 in the opening game. The Eagles were resilient, and fought back in the next game to win 25-12. The Rams responded by defeating the Eagles 25-11 in game three.
Facing elimination in the fourth game, BC managed to squeeze out a two-point victory of 28-26, forcing a fifth and final set. Rhode Island came out strong in the final game, earning the match victory with a 15-10 decision.
"After losing a tough match in five games the night before, it was good to see them win that fifth game," said Schneck.
Welsh and McIntosh both earned All-Tournament Team honors as the Art Carmichael Invitational came to a close. Welsh is leading the team with 84 kills this season.
"We have a young team," Schneck said. "[There are] two freshmen starting and a number of sophomores. Caitlyn [Welsh], who's a junior, is the oldest starter on the team. They just need to have experience together," Schneck said of the team.
The Rams will be attending the University of New Hampshire Invitational this weekend. This tournament will include games against New Hampshire, Seton Hall, and Evansville. "We have good film on UNH, we're going to be ready for them," Schneck said.
