9/16/08 - It was a cloudy day outside. I was stuck in traffic on my way to URI and I knew I was never going to find parking in the Fine Arts lot. The forecast was rain with a 90 percent chance of stress. Why was I smiling one would ask? I had just popped in my roomie's new CD, Sounds Like This, from singer - songwriter Eric Hutchinson- and it's just the type of music that makes rain clouds and traffic disappear.
Inspired by artists like G. Love & Special Sauce, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and Michael Jackson, Eric Hutchinson creates a pop-folk sound with bluesy piano rhythms and guitar chords that distract feet into a playful stomping.
Sound-wise, his music falls somewhere in between Jason Mraz and Ben Folds Five. The combination of upbeat vocals, piano and guitar mixed with inspiring lyrics creates a happy-go-lucky sensation that curls your lips into an unforeseen smile.
In the song, "It Hasn't Been Long Enough," Hutchinson uses the help of a saxophone solo to complement the powerful vocals. Or in songs like, "You've Got You," and "Ok, It's Alright With Me," constant clapping or tambourines chime in the background and add a perfect sense of passion into the harmony.
The album is a little over a half-hour long, with each track offering up original lyrics, and an authentic Jack Johnson-meets-Michael Jackson beat. First made famous by appearing on Perez Hilton's blog as one of the top 10 albums available on iTunes, Eric Hutchinson originally released his album,
Sounds Like This, in August 2007 on his own record label, Let's Break Records. It wasn't until March that he signed with Warner Brothers. You may recognize him from touring with G. Love or opening for Pete Francis of Dispatch. Hutchinson has also opened for Blind Melon, Jack's Mannequin, Jason Mraz, and One Republic.
Or, you may know his sound from his hit single, "Rock N Roll," featured in the recently released movie, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. "Rock N Roll" is a track from his 2003 debut album, That Could've Gone Better. The song has a catchy hook, with lyrics that basically describe a guy and a girl meeting at a club and leaving with personal judgments set aside.
A graduate of Emerson College. Eric Hutchinson is a young artist on the rise. Strumming his guitar and singing his catchy hooks, he offers a beat that can turn any bad situation into a good one. Or at least help you forget about it for a few minutes.
