09/18/08 - Staff and representatives from Career Services were outside Roosevelt Hall in full-force yesterday, handing out pizza and soda at its annual Welcome Party.

Bobbi Koppel, director of Career Services, said the purpose of the event, which has been held for the past eight years, was to welcome students back to school and spread awareness about Career Services' programs. The Walgreens-sponsored event attracted hundreds of students from across the campus.

"I think its great," said psychology major Natalie Brooks. "They offer a great service for students and there is free pizza. I'm into it."

Apart from Career Services staff handing out Frisbees and food, representatives from other organizations were spreading their messages.

Alexis Lamb, an assistant graduate student of the University of Rhode Island Counseling Center, told students they always have someone to talk to. The Counseling Center offers students free counseling, from drug and alcohol abuse to relationship problems. They also offer depression screenings and ADHD evaluations.

Nursing and nutrition major Jacky Tally represented the Student Alumni Association at the Welcome Day fair. She explained the organization helps bridge the gap between freshmen and alumni. "The main focus is planning events and networking," Tally said.

Peace Corps recruitment officer January Zuk, who volunteered in Uganda from 2001 to 2004, was a beacon to students looking to travel the world and help others. She handed out memoirs written by Peace Corps volunteers and spoke of the highlights in volunteering for the organization.

"Volunteers serve in education, information technologies, business, agriculture and health care," Zuk said.

Representatives from Walgreens gave away planners, and said that they wanted to assist Career Services in their goal of helping students find direction.

Koppel said that she sent out more than 12,000 e-mails about the event to make sure that students knew about it.

Career Services has a staff of career advisers that help students find focus in their studies. They offer a range of workshops including resume reviews and online assessment tools that help students find an academic interest.

"We consider ourselves educators, too," Koppel said.

She said she wanted to highlight the RhodyNet service, a system that allows employers to post job and internship openings online.

Koppel said it is an easy resource for students looking for positions available on and off campus.
