09/18/08 - The University of Rhode Island women's volleyball team snapped its three game losing streak Wednesday night with a win over the College of Holy Cross.

After a disappointing loss Tuesday night to Northeastern the team bounced back to beat Holy Cross last night 3-1.

Head coach Bob Schneck was still upset with the loss to Northeastern and was not impressed with his team's performance. "I think we could have done a lot better," he said.

Tuesday night the Rams lost a highly contested match in straight sets 26-24, 25-21 and 26-24.

The offense was led by freshmen outside hitter Stacey Yohannes with eight kills and Cailtyn Welsh tallied just five kills.

"We didn't play well this weekend and I think it carried over," said Schneck. "We clearly were capable of beating them. I can't believe the amount of unforced errors."

Wednesday night was a different story for the Rams as they got back on track and improved their record to 6-6 on the season.

The team dominated the first two sets winning 25-8, 25-15 respectively. Holy Cross rallied back taking the third set 25-22. The Ram's offense proved to be too much for the Crusaders winning the fourth set 25-15 to take the match.

"Honestly we could have played cleaner," said senior Peggy Doino. "We lost that third game not because they beat us, but because we beat ourselves."

Up two sets Schneck decided to shake up the lineup a bit rotating some of his younger players into the match in the third set.

"I think they lost their focus last night and that still was there a little bit tonight in the third set," Schneck said. "They knew what we were doing, and they jumped all over us. I give them credit. If we wanted to win in three sets we could have, but I chose to experiment. The third set loss was my fault.

Sophomore Lauren McIntosh led the team offensively with 14 kills and junior outside hitter Caitlyn Welsh added 13 kills after being held under 10 kills for just the third time all season the night before.

"We started off really strong, but hit a lull in third set," said senior Jillian Bekke. "But I'm happy we ended non-conference play with a win."

The Rams are a young team with six upperclassmen.

"With two freshmen in the lineup, this is an underclassman team," Schneck said. "They need to develop more confidence in themselves. This team has to play much better."

Twelve matches into to the season the team is at .500 heading into Atlantic 10 conference play.

Doino showed confidence after the game.

"I absolutely love it. The freshmen have been a great addition," she said. "I'm very happy with the potential our team has."

The Rams head to Philadelphia this weekend for a pair of conference matches.

"We open up against LaSalle the last place team and the least funded team in the conference. We can't take them for granted," said Schneck.

After LaSalle on Friday, the Rams will take on Temple University Saturday.
