09/19/08 - In the first of three straight games in front of its home crowd, the University of Rhode Island held Vermont to just two shots on goal Wednesday night, taking the victory, 2-0.

URI extended Vermont's season high losing streak to five games and was shut out for the fourth time in only eight games.

"I think we played well tonight, but I think that we're probably more than two goals better than them," coach Zac Shaw said. "But we've had to work and we have to work at everything."

Rhode Island improved to 3-4-1 with Wednesday's victory, and despite its offensive struggles, the young and resilient Rhody squad showed its true potential with its shutdown defensive effort.

Vermont's first shot on goal came with just over eight and half minutes remaining in the first half, and was a long shot at best. Its best opportunity to score came 13 minutes into the second half when the ball sailed off the goalpost from the foot of a Catamount forward.

URI controlled the pace of the game, especially in the second half, when the ball remained as far away from goalkeeper Jackie Fede as possible. Fede, a sophomore, came up with her second shutout in a row coming off Rhody's 5-0 victory to Indiana State this weekend.

Sophomore Adrienne Ruhe Lischke picked up right where she left off when she scored the first of the Rams' two goals. The goal was assisted by Rhody's freshman forward, Erese Fair.

Lischke is the reigning Student Athlete of the Week for Rhode Island, and she earned All Tournament Team Honors at the Purdue Boilermaker Challenge Cup during the weekend. She recorded one goal and two assists at the tournament and did not disappoint in front of her home crowd in Kingston.

"Adrienne is, first of all, a great kid," said Shaw on his sophomore star. "It's like she has flipped the switch and the last couple of games has been awesome. I'm really excited because she's just getting better and better and better and more comfortable with the idea that she's going to be someone we're going to count on to score goals."

With six minutes remaining in the game, senior Sarah Helldoerfer ended any chance of a potential comeback by blasting an unassisted goal. It was her third goal of the year and put the Catamounts away for good.

The Rams will take on Manhattan at home on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"I think that Sunday is going to be another challenge, and I don't think that we're at the point yet where we can overlook anyone," said Shaw. "Every game for us is going to be a little bit of a struggle right now. Sometimes when you're young, it's harder to play at home. For a young team coming home it's harder because nobody has seen us and we're just a bunch of 'boxscorers' and we're trying to impress."
