10/01/08 - The University of Rhode Island dropped a 42-0 decision to Boston College on Saturday in the first game between the two schools since 1917.

The Rams (1-4, 0-2 CAA) kept it close early before turnovers led them to their fate.

"Anytime you step up to play a team like that, you need fundamentals," head coach Darren Rizzi said. "There were many times when we looked like we belonged on the field with them, but we shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers."

After holding the Eagles scoreless in the first quarter, the Rams' defense was no match for their running game in the second. BC replaced quarterback Chris Crane for back up freshman Dominique Davis. Eagles' freshman running back Montel Harris made a five-yard run to give BC the 7-0 advantage.

URI was unable to do anything with the ball with its next possession as BC took the ball from the 50-yard line for its possession. The Eagles scored another touchdown with two more running plays to add onto their score, 14-0.

"We came out firing," said Rizzi. "We had guys in position on most plays, but we didn't always make those plays, and that's what hurt us."

Another thing Rizzi said hurt the team was the turnovers. After the Eagles took the 14-0 lead, they were on the receiving end of two turnovers that turned into two touchdowns, 28-0.

"Those turnovers before the half really hurt us," said Rizzi. "It takes a lot out of the team for that to happen before halftime."

The Rams started off better in the second half when freshman Terence Glenn recovered an onside kick to give URI the ball. Then freshman punter Tim Edger threw a nine-yard pass to junior Joe Bellini to complete a first down. The Rams drove the ball to the Eagles' 23-yard line, but the play ended when senior quarterback Derek Cassidy's pass to tight end junior David Wilson was an incomplete.

Freshman Willie McGinnis forced a BC fumble on the next play. Cassidy threw into another turnover that gave BC the momentum for the rest of the game.

With another touchdown play from the Eagles' and another turnover from Cassidy, BC took the 42-0 victory.

"There were a lot of positives we got from the game," Rizzi said. "We were very focused and prepared coming in here. I think it's all part of the team's progress and we plan to carry it over to next week."

URI made 267 yards, as Cassidy was 26-of-41 for 189 yards.

URI hosts Brown University on Saturday for the 93rd annual Governor's Cup at 1 p.m.
