10/02/08 - The University of Rhode Island women's tennis team did not lose a single match yesterday as it defeated Providence College 7-0 at home.

Freshmen sisters Tristany and Kirsten Leikem continued their high level of play in both singles and doubles competition. As a doubles pair, they won their match 8-2.

"They just dominated the net all match," said head coach Sandy Wood, who continues to be impressed with the level of maturity on the court shown by his young players.

Each Leikem sister also won her singles match handily; Tristany defeated Aynshi Sinha in two sets, (6-1, 6-3), and Kirsten beat Ashley Rissolo without allowing one game, (6-0, 6-0).

Freshman Pam Emery and junior Amanda Barletta paired up to win the second doubles match, 8-4. URI's only two seniors, Grace Hedstrom and Valerie Chacon, took the final doubles match by a score of 8-1.

After winning their respective doubles matches, Barletta and sophomore Christen Cadigan each blanked their opponents in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Wood said that he is pleased with the way the team has performed so far this season, especially this match.

"I didn't really have to do much today," he said. "I didn't really have to coach anyone through a match because they had control all day."

Singles matches were also won by Emery and Hedstrom, each beating their opponent by the same score, 6-1, 6-2.

Next up for the Rams is another home match; the Hofstra University team comes to Kingston at 3 p.m. on Friday. Wood said that this will be his team's toughest test of the season thus far, but he believes that his team is ready for it.

"We are a lot deeper and better than we were last year," Wood said about his 3-0 team. Wood also said that while his team has not faced a very tough task yet, they will in the near future. After Hofstra, the team will go to Fairfield, Conn., for the New England Championships.
