10/03/08 - The University of Rhode Island women's volleyball team snapped its two-match losing streak, defeating in-state rival Brown University Wednesday night.

Three players posted double digit kills for the Rams as they notched in a victory in the rivalry for the first time since the 2004 season.

Leading the way for the Rams was sophomore Lauren McIntosh with 12 kills, followed by freshmen Kayla Wilson with 11 and junior Caitlyn Welsh with 10.

Head coach Bob Schneck thought the team played really well, considering the team has lost five out of its last six matches. He was pleased to see three of his players in double digits.

"I think they we were starting to self doubt," he said. "When you do that, you start looking for reasons why."

"It was nice to see three people in double digits. If you don't have double digits then you don't have enough kills," he added.

The offense was back on track out hitting Brown .250-.185 and edging them out 56-53 in kill totals.

"We have been trying to eliminate our unforced errors, that is what's been keeping us from winning," ny, Schneck said." "Forty percent of our opponent's points have been off unforced errors. You can't win that way."

The Rams started the match off strong, taking the first two sets 25-18, 25-19. Brown took the third set 25-20. But the Rams closed Brown out in the fourth set with a close victory of 25-23, taking the match 3-1.

"The thing that made it possible was when passing their serve we did a good job, but they had trouble passing our serve," Schneck said.

The Rams also played strong defensively, accounting for 11 blocks, which is the third time this season the team has tallied 10 or more blocks. Welsh and senior Peggy Doino added 22 and 19 digs respectively. "That was huge for us," Schneck added.

The 22 digs for Welsh tied her season high and recorded her eighth double double of the season.

"She played much better," said Schneck.

The win improves the teams' record to 7-8 for the season (0-2 in Atlantic 10 play). The schedule only gets harder for the Rams as they play in the tougher west division in the Atlantic 10.

"It's going to be difficult. We play in one of the top conferences in the country. Our two goals are to have a winning season and to make the Atlantic 10 Championships," said Schneck.

"We have Central Connecticut next Tuesday. We have to get ready-they are always good," Schneck said.
