The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team lost two games over the weekend. On Friday, URI lost to the University of Richmond 2-0 in Richmond, Va; followed by a loss to George Washington University, 1-0, in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.
Rhode Island (4-8-1 overall, 0-4 conference), following three games in which it outscored its opponents 13-0, has now lost four games in a row, all within the Atlantic 10 conference. Rhody has yet to score in a conference game.
"We actually played well," head coach Zac Shaw said. "We are getting better and better throughout the season. We are creating chances."
In the first game, Richmond (9-2-1, 3-1) got on the board with a goal in the 19th minute. After heading into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Spiders punched in an insurance goal in the 79th minute. Rhode Island sophomore Adrienne Ruhe Lischke provided the best scoring chance, hitting the crossbar in the 36th minute.
For the game, Richmond outshot Rhode Island 11-9, including 7-2 on goal. The shots on goal were by freshmen Stephanie Santos and Erese Fair. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Fede contributed five saves.
"We have to translate chances into goals," Shaw said. "We haven't scored a goal in the last four games."
10/10/08 - In the second game, George Washington (6-6, 2-2) used a set piece off a corner kick to get on the board in only the third minute.
"Don't give up soft goals," Shaw said. Rhody hung in tough, though, arguably outplaying the Colonials in the final 87 minutes. URI out shot GW 19-14, including a dominating 11-4 in the first half. Once again Fede chipped in with five saves. Shaw realizes it is important for the Rams to get back on track with three conference home games coming up.
"Of course [it's important]," he said. "As a group we are kind of young, and we are learning how to win."
With five out of their last seven regular season games at home and in the conference, Shaw knows his team will have chances down the stretch.
"Winning six out of our last seven is not out of the question," he said. "But we can't take anyone for granted."
Rhode Island will get back in action on Friday against the University of Dayton at home.
"Dayton is one of the top teams in the conference," he said.
