The candidates for this years' homecoming are Becky Davis, Kelley Lynch, Charlsey Gentile, Pete Callahan, Andrew Cadorette and Ray Sammarco.
Becky Davis is a senior and was nominated for homecoming by the Newman club on campus. The Newman club, a Catholic organization on campus, feels like one big family to her, Davis said. She is a pharmacy major, but is also working on a master's in Business Administration.
"URI has made me who I am," Davis said.
Davis said she felt she would be a good representative for the school. She is the president of the professional pharmacy sorority, Lambda Kappa Sigma, has been a URI 101 mentor for two years, and volunteered last year in New Orleans where she helped re-build homes and even sheet-rocked.
She also enjoys running and reading in her spare time. Davis said, "URI feels like home to me, and I even developed a Rhode Island accent," Davis, who is a resident of Maine, said.
Senior Kelley Lynch said she feels being homecoming queen would be a great experience. The Rhode Island resident is currently majoring in communication studies with a double minor in French and leadership studies. Lynch has been a Resident Assistant in Barlow Hall for three years and this year, her hall nominated her for the candidacy. She also has been an orientation leader for two years, a URI 101 mentor, and is currently interning with the Admissions Department. "I am very driven. If I set my mind to it, I do my best to accomplish that goal," Lynch said.
Senior Charlsey Gentile is majoring in human development and family studies. She was nominated by her sorority, Zeta Epsilon Tau Alpha, and believes it is an honor to represent them.
"It is a humbling experience," Gentile, who is from Auburn, Mass., said.
She is president of her sorority, and she is also a Peer Advocate, URI 101 mentor, and the Executive Director of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
"I am involved in so many different parts of campus [and] I'd be a positive role model," Gentile said.
Senior Pete Callahan was nominated by his fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau for the homecoming candidacy and believes he has done a lot of different things on campus. He is involved in the Student Alumni Association, Business Student Advisory Council, and is involved with Greek life. He has been a resident assistant in Weldin Hall for two years and also participates in intramural sports, including volleyball, basketball and softball. Callahan-always an adventurous person, he said-went skydiving last summer and cliff jumping in Hawaii last spring.
"I believe that I have a lot of experience in multiple areas on campus, from residential life to Greek life to the Alumni Association," Callahan, who is from Cape Cod, said.
Senior Andrew Cadorette was nominated by his pharmacy fraternity, Kappa Psi, for homecoming king.
"When I first approached the campus as a freshman in the pharmacy program, I committed myself that I would not just be a face or name in the crowd," Cadorette said.
The Maine resident is involved in the Academy of Student Pharmacists, and the Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmaceutical Leadership Society. He has been an active member in the Orientation Program for three years, a campus tour guide, and a URI 101 mentor.
"I thank, in advance, all the people who support me with this nomination. If it wasn't for the people I've met throughout these past years, this wouldn't have happened," Cadorette said.
Ray Sammarco is a senior at URI and is currently majoring in Microbiology. The Student Entertainment Committee nominated him for homecoming king.
Sammarco, a Rhode Island resident, believes he should win because he has "tons of school spirit" and is really involved on campus. He is involved with the orientation program, Greek Life as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and is also a Tour Guide. Sammarco is also a URI 101 mentor, and a resident assistant. When he is not busy with on campus activities he enjoys swimming.
"It is a great honor to be nominated," Sammarco said.
