10/21/08 - "Maybe I should have improved my attitude." That was Kenley's reaction to the announcement that Tim Gunn would be replacing an injured Jennifer Lopez as one of the final judges... and it sums up a the reason why she was not the winner of the fifth season of "Project Runway."
Kenley finally seemed to realize how much of a bitch she had been to the Gunn and the other contestants for the entire time. Her personality probably hurt her as much as the accusations of copying other designers' pieces.
Her wedding dress again came under attack by the judges - particularly Nina Garcia, editor of Elle magazine - for being a knockoff.
Kenley, despite previously meeting any claims of her work being knockoffs with the response, "That's bullshit," admitted that "maybe I need to do research."
This was the second of two moments during the episode were she was actually able handle constructive criticism without instantly reverting to the brat role she played all season.
The first came earlier in the episode where she headed Tim Gunn's advice to not make the wedding dress, the one that the judges had called a knockoff, the featured piece of her line.
Gunn also remarked during the judges' final discussion that "she needs to take a fashion history course."
Of course, Kenley still dominated the episode with her bratty antics. This included telling everyone what models they should use for their lines at the beginning of the episode, criticizing the eventual winner by saying "Leanne doesn't know how to use colors," and not allowing the fashion students assigned to help her touch any of her clothes.
She also said that "Everyone that had good taste liked it," after her line finished on the runway.
Leanne was shown firing back with some harsh comments concerning Kenley's line, saying it looked very "Holly Hobbie" and like "someone's kid just colored all over it."
Korta managed to stay out of the verbal crossfire and was gracious in her defeat with the exception of her super villain-sounding parting shot of "This is definitely not the last of Korta."
Her line was praised for being a reflection of her African heritage and she was praised for knowing what women want and her ability to design clothes for a variety of sizes.
Leanne's winning collection was inspired by the ocean and most of clothes featured wavy sections of fabric that judges called petals.
The judges' only concern was that the petals would be the only thing that Leanne could do, with Nina Garcia criticizing the collection as "too much of one look."
However that was the only complaint. Garcia liked that Leanne showed a variety of clothes in her collection, showing skirts, pants, jackets, and a long dress.
Her dresses' workmanship was described as "divine." She also earned bonus points by being environmentally conscious by announcing that half of her collection was made using sustainable textiles.
This is the final season of "Project Runway" to air on Bravo. Season six move to Lifetime Network.
