10/31/08 - The Feinstein Enriching America Program, University of Rhode Island College of Business and the Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation proudly bring to you the first-ever URI Purple Out.
The Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation is a local nonprofit organization in Wakefield, RI.
The Siravos had lost their five-year-old son, Matty, due to complications with epilepsy in 2003. According to its Web site, "The Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation is dedicated to providing aid for Epilepsy research and education, Epilepsy awareness through educational programs and annual scholarships to high school seniors diagnosed with Epilepsy."
The Matthew Siravo Foundation has teamed up with the URI 101 Business sections to sell purple T-shirts that are to be worn on Nov. 7 to raise epilepsy awareness on campus. The T-shirts should be worn at the URI vs. Rhode Island College basketball that night in the Ryan Center at 7 p.m.
The Purple Out will be very similar to the "Pink Out" held in the past that was sponsored by the Gloria Gemma Foundation .
We're hoping to turn the Ryan Center into a sea of purple to support the cause. Also, you can get into the game for free if you are wearing the shirt.
The T-shirts are $8 and all proceeds go to the Matthew Siravo Foundation. You can purchase them at various locations on campus, including the Memorial Union, Hope Commons, Ballentine Hall or during Family Weekend.
Just keep in mind that they will not be sold on the night of the event, so you have to pick them up beforehand!
You may also visit us at the Clearinghouse for Volunteers (Roosevelt 125) to purchase a shirt.
According to Epilepsy Foundation of America, "Epilepsy affects 2.3 million Americans and is the third most common neurological disorder. Nearly 200,000 new cases occur each year. One in every 100 Americans will experience a seizure at some point in their lives, while 3 percent will develop Epilepsy."
Give your support to the cause, get a purple Rhody T-shirt and enjoy a great basketball game!
