URI women's hockey team dominates UConn 14-0

11/07/08 - The University of Rhode Island women's ice hockey team improved to 6-0 last weekend, defeating the University of Connecticut 14-0.

"[UConn is] are usually pretty competitive," head coach Beth McCann said. "They just didn't have the bodies or a goalie in the net."

Junior Nicole Ouellette scored the first goal slightly more than two minutes into the match, and scored six more times in the period.

The Rams carried a comfortable 7-0 lead into the second period. Junior Jolene Rambone scored three goals in the period to pad the Rhody lead. By the end of the period the score was 11-0. URI added three more goals in the third period to complete the 14-0 shutout.

Rambone led the way for URI, scoring five goals and adding one assist. Freshman Johanna Leskinen added two goals and four assists. Sophomore Justine Ducie provided the Rams with four assists in the game, as freshman Danika Korpacz chipped in a goal and three assists.

Senior Kate Garcia and sophomore Caroline Greene each contributed three points to the game. Other goal scorers for the Rams were Ouellette, freshman Meghan Birnie, junior Christina Ferencevych and freshman Rebecca Manning.

"We've had nine new freshmen," McCann said. "We are starting to develop chemistry and carry on our confidence."

URI freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Keach played the entire 60 minutes of the game, turning away all 19 shots on net for her first shutout of the year.

"Our goalkeeping has been very good," McCann said. "They have really stepped it up."

The Rams are now 6-0 and have outscored their opponents 54-5. Rambone, who has scored 12 goals and 10 assists thus far, has led the team. Leskinen is leading the team with 12 assists and has scored nine goals.

Rhode Island will resume play this weekend against the University of Colorado with a pair of games on Friday and Sunday.

"Colorado should be very competitive," McCann said. "We are looking forward to that challenge."
