11/14/08 - Coming off of a 5-4 overtime win, the University of Rhode Island Rams hockey team split their weekend matchup against the University of Scranton Royals.

The Rhody Rams won 4-1 Friday, but lost the scoring frenzy between both teams 8-7 on Saturday.

The Rams have been in need for goals lately. Even though they scored 11 goals last weekend, they still only came away with one win.

"We had more ups and downs this season, when we haven't played well-we played really bad. We need to find some consistency," head Coach Joe Augustine said about the team's halfway mark of the season.

The Rams started the weekend by striking first at 18:56 in the second period when sophomore Peter Ducharme scored his second goal of the season.

More scoring came URI's way when at 2:16 senior captain Cory Manley scored his eighth goal of the season. URI added to the 2-0 lead in the third period when freshman Evan Dietz scored at 10:36. The Scranton Royals prevented a shutout when they finally got on the board at 14:44.

Sophomore Kyle Krannich sealed URI's win when he scored his fifth goal of the season on an empty netter.

Junior goalie Andrew Lisi had a solid day in net, stopping 23 out of the 24 shots coming his way. Going along with his impressive day in net, Lisi was credited with an assist on Manley's goal in the third period.

A scoring matchup tqook place Saturday night with 15 goals scored between both teams.

Four goals were scored in the first period for the Rams. Freshmen Jay Dupras and Dan Lassik contributed two goals in the first period, along with Manley and Dietz.

The second period belonged to the Scranton Royals, who scored four goals on 12 shots. At 4:09, Thiele tied the game, and at 4:41 Torstrup gave the Royals the lead. Scranton scored again at 6:46 and 15:43.

The Rams stopped the bleeding in the second period and fought back to a deficit of one. Manley scored his second goal of the game and his 10th goal of the season at 17:33, and sophomore EJ Astarita scored his first goal of the season at a crucial time near the end of the period at 18:30.

URI tied the score at seven when senior Mike Bragger scored at 7:06 in the third period. The Royals scored the game-winning goal at 8:22 and ended the hard-fought battle on top.

"We had troubles scoring those in our previous games, but when you score seven goals and lose, it's not great," said Augustine.

The Rams have had some success so far this season, stringing together both winning and losing streaks. With almost half the season over, the Rams' record is 9-4-1 for the season.

The Rams will come home to the Boss Arena tonight, where they will match up against a tough opponent, Wesleyan University.

"This will probably be the best team we play all year, they have talented players and are all around a quick team," Augustine said. "We are going to have our work cut out for us; and if we don't show up, it's going to be a long night."
