11/20/08 - Coming home after a tough 8-7 loss to Scranton University, the University of Rhode Island men's ice hockey team bounced back to defeat NCAA Division III Wesleyan University, 6-4, last weekend.
"This was the best win we had," said coach Joe Augustine, who earned his 400th career win with the Wesleyan defeat. "It was [Wesleyan's] first game of the season and we played them tough. Hopefully this will carry over against Penn[sylvania] State [University]."
The first period belonged to the Wesleyan Cardinals, who started the scoring at 5:47 with a goal by Dan Sullivan. Junior David Layne added two goals in that period, and freshman Pete Taylor scored the fourth goal of the first period at 18:34.
"We weren't competing out there, instead of being spectators, we started playing," Augustine said during the first period intermission.
URI (10-4-1) was in need of goals and another goalie. Junior goalie and Andrew Lisi left the game early in the first period after stopping five of seven shots. Lisi went down awkwardly after saving a Wesleyan shot and was taken off the ice.
"We aren't really sure what it is, we might think it is a high groin pull or something in that vicinity," Augustine said about his goalie's injury.
Freshman goalie Joe Spagnoli replaced Lisi and had an impressive night in goal, stopping 23 out of 25 shots coming his way, sparking the Rams in their comeback.
The second period started off well for the Rams. With 1:21 into the period, sophomore Peter Ducharme scored his third goal of the season on a turnover in Wesleyan's zone. The Rams added another goal later in the second period at 7:00 when sophomore Devin Sheehan scored his third goal of the season. Sheehan was assisted by senior Mike Bragger.
Down 4-2, the Rams started the third period strong. Twenty-nine seconds into the period sophomore Kyle Krannich scored on a breakaway and brought the Rams deficit to one goal.
The Rams tied the game at four when freshman Richie Falasca scored a power play goal at 10:06 in the third period. Rhody then took the lead at 11:13 when senior Matt Wodecki scored the game-winning goal, his third goal of the season.
Senior Cory Manley ended Wesleyan's hopes for a comeback when he scored his 11th goal of the season on an empty net.
The game was Spagnoli's first win of the season. He said, "Lisi's injury took me by surprise, but after practicing for so long I really felt prepared. I credit the win to my defense and offense."
The Rams will be home this weekend playing, against another tough opponent in Penn State.
