11/25/08 - The University of Rhode Island women's basketball team lost its first road game of the season, 91-43, against the University of Connecticut Huskies Saturday afternoon.
UConn came into the game No. 1 in the country and did not disappoint on its home court.
The Rams saw its only lead of the game when junior Lindsay Harris nailed a jumpshot to give her squad a 4-2 lead just over a minute and a half into the game. The Huskies answered quickly, scoring 17 points over the next 4:18 to push its lead to 19-4. This helped the Huskies to win their 27th consecutive home game and their 90th consecutive game over a non-conference opponent.
UConn had five players register double-digits for the third game in a row. This was the first time it accomplished this feat since the 2000-01 season.
"We're going to have to do a little bit better on our defensive philosophy," URI's coach Garrick said.
Connecticut nearly doubled Rhody's field goal percentage as it shot 60 percent, while holding the Rams to only 30 percent.
"We needed to rebound better and we didn't execute offensively," Garrick added.
UConn's Tina Charles scored 21 points and grabbed nine boards as she recorded her third straight game with double-digit points.
"She's just too big, too strong," coach Garrick said of Charles. "You have to match her size and her strength, and if you don't have one of those two elements it's going to be a long night."
UConn freshman Tiffany Hayes added 15 points and collected seven boards as well.
URI sophomore guard, Megan Shoniker led Rhody scoring a personal season high 11 points.
"She hit some timely shots," Garrick said. "I think she was in a bit of a slump so hopefully that game helps her break out of it."
Connecticut capped off a 24-0 run with just over three minutes remaining in the first half, pushing its lead to 51-9. The Huskies entered the break with a dominating 53-16 advantage and showed no signs of slowing down in the second half, as it outscored the Rams 38-27 in the second period.
The Rams turned the ball over 26 times while committing 18 fouls. Garrick focused on UConn's aggressive play and felt it was a huge part of Rhody becoming the 216th consecutive non-ranked team to lose on the Huskies home floor.
"I thought it killed us," he said. "One team is playing aggressively and one team is playing passive. I think they shot 19 free throws in the first half."
The Rams look to even its win-loss column at two a piece when it travels to Brown University tonight to take on the Bears. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
