12/04/08 - As the holidays approach, the season of giving is in the air. During these tough financial times, it is important to remember those who are in need.
Here on campus:
Coming up this weekend is the big Providence College vs. University of Rhode Island men's basketball game. In order to prepare for the event, canned foods are being collected at the game, down in Athletics (Tootell Gymnasium 126), and tables will be set up in Hope Commons between noon and 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Show your school spirit and the spirit of giving by donating. All proceeds will benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank and the JonnyCake Center.
This season you may also give the gift of reading to a small child.
"First Book is a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. They provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs."
There will be a table outside of Hope Commons on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 from 11a.m. - 4:30 p.m. All you need is $2 to give a child his or her first book for the holidays!
The Providence Journal recently printed an article highlighting a range of activities people can contribute to during the next few weeks. These opportunities include:
"Northeast Engineers & Consultants, which is collecting food nonperishable items for the Martin Luther King Center's 'Feed a Friend' program. Donations are being accepted until Dec. 14. If you are interested in helping any further you may contact Mary Pat Radeka at 380-1209 or Cecile Brown at 380-1294."
"The Samaritans of Rhode Island program is seeking volunteers to answer crisis/listening lines during the holiday season. They are also collecting money to help support its suicide prevention program. For details about volunteering, you can visit their Web site www.samaritansri.org."
Other organizations are holding events, too, such as the Rhode Island Food Bank. The food bank's goal is to collect five truckloads of food for families for the holidays. Donations of frozen turkeys, holiday meal fixings, or other contributions are being accepted at the Food Bank Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 200 Niantic Ave. in Providence.
