"Today we just came up on the short end," head coach Tom Garrick said. "We started out and played very well in the first half. We executed and did what we had to do defensively. That's just kind of the way the ball bounces sometimes."
The Rams and the Huskies went back and forth, trading hoop for hoop from the tip-off to the final buzzer. Rhody outshot Northeastern from the field and committed three less turnovers, but the post play from Huskies' junior forward Kim Carr was far too much for the Rams to handle.
Carr led all scorers with 22 points and added five rebounds, while dishing out one assist and rejecting one shot. The Huskies also saw great production from its sophomore guard Jasmine Crew, who added 13 points and six assists.
"[Northeastern] played a valiant game," Garrick said. "Northeastern is a pretty solid team. I know they hadn't won yet but they're very athletic and they can put you in mismatches."
After Northeastern freshman guard Brittany Wilson's layup gave her squad an early 17-10 lead just under the nine-minute mark, Rhody answered with a commanding 18-9 run. The run was highlighted by five points from freshman guard Sherrie Session, who scored all of her points in Rhody's momentum-changing run.
Rhode Island senior guard Amanda McGrew also contributed five of her total 10 points during this stretch and found junior guard Lindsay Harris for an easy break-away layup with just seconds remaining in the half. Harris added six points during the run and finished with 10 points while grabbing six rebounds.
"I think our offense went really well throughout the whole game," Garrick said. "They never changed their defense so what we were doing offensively was suited for their 3-2 zone [defense]."
After each team committed a turnover to open up the second half, Carr was able to convert on the first attempted shot to tie the game at 28. The Rams would then go on a 6-1 run, as Harris, McGrew and senior guard Sierra Cooper all contributed a bucket, helping Rhody push its lead to 34-29.
