12/09/08 - This weekend many University of Rhode Island students awoke to the first real snowfall of the season. There wasn't even an inch worth, but flurries coated windowsills, dusted sidewalks and made it seem a little more like the holidays.

For some, the holiday season at college just doesn't seem the same. Where's the smell of cookies, all the lights and decorations, the Christmas trees and the Menorahs?

"The most wonderful time of the year" doesn't always seem that wonderful with the pressure of exams looming, the wrath of the winter weather and the financial stress that comes with the holidays.

But don't let it get you down. Finals are here and the sweet release of winter break is near.

Before you know it, the stress of exams will be a thing of the past, and a month of relaxation between the semesters is all yours.

If that just isn't exciting enough to boost your spirits, here are a few ideas to spread some holiday cheer during these last few days around campus.

Firstly, decorating your dorm room is an easy way to lift spirits. Take a study break and a trip down memory lane by cutting out snowflakes to decorate the windows, or try paper chains or stringing popcorn.

While you're at it, treat yourself to a holiday beverage like hot chocolate and apple cider. It'll keep you nice and toasty while braving those winter winds. For our more adventurous readers, try some eggnog.

Speaking of eggnog, Dining Services is serving a special holiday dinner tomorrow in Butterfield and Hope featuring candlelight, prime rib, pumpkin soup and holiday cookies…and eggnog, too.

Another fun way to make merry is gift exchanges. Guessing who drew whose name in a Secret Santa-type exchange is always interesting. But because most college students are broke, keep in mind it's thought that counts.

Another holiday favorite is the gingerbread house. Save your milk cartons, pick up some graham crackers and make the best kind of craft: an edible one.

So, in the week or so before we go our separate ways, back to our hometowns, to our relatives or to wherever this season takes may take you, make it a point to savor the little things. Appreciate your friends, your roommates, your URI family.

Hang your stockings, blast the Christmas songs and finally, mistletoe anyone?
