12/08/09 - Returning home to the Boss Arena after a hard-fought 2-2 tie against the University of Massachusetts, the University of Rhode Island women's ice hockey team swept the Pennsylvania State University last weekend, 12-0 and 7-1.

After losing and tying UMass, the Rams easily defeated PSU in both games.

"We have been playing well," head coach Beth McCann said. "We have a lot of challenging games coming up. Losing to UMass really woke us up."

Friday night started off well for the Rams when senior Kate Garcia scored at 5:08. The Rams quickly added two more goals in the first period at 3:24 when freshman Jessica Morgrillo scored.

The second period was more good news for the Rams. Junior Jolene Rambone scored two goals in the period, coming at 19:34 and 14:08. With a 6-0 lead, sophomore Rachel MacDonald scored a goal at 13:55. Nicole Ouelette scored her second goal of the game at 4:03 and freshman Johanna Leskinen made the score 9-0 after two periods.

With the game in favor of URI, the Rams added three more goals in the third period for a 12-0 victory.

Saturday night's game didn't start as URI wanted, with no goals in the first period and 23 shots on net.

"They needed to focus," said McCann in regards to a scoreless first period. "They couldn't take [Friday] night's game for granted. They realized what they needed to do after the period."

The Rams got on the board in the second period when Leskinen scored a power play goal at 19:08. Shortly after Leskinen's goal, the Nittany Lions answered back with a goal to tie the game. Freshman Michelle Clarke scored at 15:46 with just the third shot on goal. The Rams added four more goals in the second period. Junior Jennifer Bragger, freshman Danika Korpacz, sophomore Caroline Greene and sophomore Rachel MacDonald scored the goals.

In the third period, the Rams added to their 5-1 lead when freshman Meghan Birnie scored at 11:34 and Garcia scored at 4:51.

The Rams will be off for a couple of weeks but will be back in action the weekend of Jan. 13 when they travel to St. Louis, Mo., to play Lindenwood University.

"We will come back from break early, and we need to play as a team," McCann said about preparing her team after a long break.
