Letter: Student urges URI to invest in shovels
Issue date: 1/30/09 Section: Editorial/Opinion
01/30/09 - To the Cigar,
This letter is directed toward the University of Rhode Island administration. As a student that lives on campus, I would like to know what was running through the administration's head when it decided not to cancel school on Jan. 28. Schools and universities throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts were closed, all except URI.
Last week, I fell on one of the many ice patches covering campus, and messed up my back. Now today, in a matter of 10 minutes, I have wiped out twice more and can barely move my back; once on the steps of Washburn Hall, and once on the quad.
Now, had they shoveled adequately the last time it snowed, maybe today's weather may not have made walking conditions throughout campus so treacherous. But, thanks to their second-rate job the first time, campus is now one slick sheet of ice, and after today's weather, officially a death trap. Now I may be a clumsy individual, but I know many people who have had a sudden introduction to the pavement while walking to class. Tomorrow I'm sure walking across campus will be just as (un)safe as whatever freezes tonight begins to melt.
So as enjoyable as it may be watching students flail their arms and land cartoon style from your warm cozy offices, something really has to be done.
I'm sure investing in a couple shovels will be far cheaper than the lawsuit that you'll be served with when someone not as nice as I injures themselves.
