Reader defends Simeone, Student Senate
Issue date: 1/30/09 Section: Editorial/Opinion
01/30/09 - To the Cigar,
I would like to express my disappointment in the article "Students upset about icy sidewalks…" particularly on behalf of Krista Simeone, who I have recently spoken with. The article was unprofessional and poorly written, including several grammatical errors as well as a misspelled name.
I would like to point out that not only is Simeone a member of Students For a More Accessible Campus, she is the president and founder. She began this group in an effort to jump-start student interest in working with the university to make the campus more accessible for students with mental and physical disabilities, and also to make the University of Rhode Island a safer place for all students.
The quotes used to build this article were poorly chosen and taken out of context. I am quite sure that the employees at Lands and Grounds are not lounging and eating sandwiches while watching students fail miserably at ice-skating. The author, however, would have us believe that they are placing bets on which students will fall first. I would like to thank them, however, as I have seen a difference since the Senate meeting.
Our Student Senate was represented as a group with nothing constructive to say, which is certainly not true. The Student Senate is very well organized and is also very open.
They are also misrepresented as having proposed that students might aid in the "cleanup effort".
This was a proposal made by Ms. Simeone.
Most importantly, I would like to point out that what Krista said before, "I wish, I hope, that [URI is] willing to bend over backwards for me, too," was of great importance in correctly interpreting her motives. She spoke about how she and her organization hope to do everything they can to make this campus a better place.
She hopes that, in return, the university will continue in respecting and caring for its students.
Simeone is one of the most caring, most selfless and most intelligent students on campus. I wish that she had been represented as such.
