02/04/09 - The University of Rhode Island women's swimming and diving team traveled to Boston College on Jan. 30 and 31, securing top three finishes in seven events during the two-day contest.
The tournament also included the University of Maine and Dartmouth College.
The Rams have experienced success in the past against Boston College, enough for URI head coach Mick Westkott to call last year's meet "the best college meet [he] can ever remember having."
Rhody was unable to best the 2007-2008 squad, but coach Westkott did have plenty of good things to say about his team this time around.
"It was a very different meet this year," Westkott said. "There were three teams competing instead of one, we didn't have home-pool advantage and last year was our senior night, but the girls were still excited and performed very well."
Sophomore Lillian Falconer was the lone first-place finisher for the Rams, winning the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 4:36.13. Falconer also earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:08.78 and was a part of the second-place 800-yard freestyle relay team.
The other relay participants were seniors Kelsey Foye and Tracey Cannon and sophomore Kinsey Tarbell.
Foye and Tarbell also participated in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay, earning third-place finishes in each. Foye added another third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, posting a time of 10:44.84.
Sophomore Alyssa Flynn rounded out the top three finishers for the Rams as she posted a third-place 1:00.91 in the 100-yard butterfly.
"I thought we stepped up and did well," Westkott said. "I was pleased with the performance."
With the regular season now over, coach Westkott has chosen his 20-member squad for the Atlantic 10 tournament roster.
Westkott and his staff will announce the team later today but mentioned sophomores Kinsey Tarbell and Lillian Falconer, senior Kelsey Foye and freshman Katie Mangano as notable selections.
Westkott said he would include all four of the divers on the team.
As Rhody prepares for the tournament, coach Westkott said it will enter a "tapering" phase.
Tapering is a resting phase of practice for the swimmers that concentrates more on fine-tuning skills rather than intense training.
"It gives their bodies a chance to recover," Westkott said.
In a transitional year for the women's swimming program, coach Weskott said he still believes they can at least match the total points the team achieved last year at the A-10 tournament.
The tournament runs Feb. 18-21 and will take place in Buffalo, N.Y.
