Letter: Alumnus ridicules student body for lack of support for athletics
Issue date: 2/18/09 Section: Editorial/Opinion
02/18/09 - To the Cigar,
I have been a season ticket holder for Universtiy of Rhode Island basketball and have attended many games during the years.
I must say that it has been rather disconcerting and embarrassing to see how few URI students actually attend games.
It is truly sad to see so few blue-shirted students screaming their heads off to support their team.
I attended URI as a graduate student and realize that time can be of the essence, but really guys, the lack of support for your basketball team, and by extension I can assume the other sports teams, is inexcusable.
Jesus, most of you can get in for free!!
What the hell can you be doing on a Saturday afternoon? Right, I guess you are in the library.
As a Rhode Islander since 1981, I can accurately state that there is little to do in the dead of winter.
A free ticket to go to a game to watch and support guys who are playing their hearts out takes very little effort, or is it too much to take the walk down to the Ryan Center?
It is truly an embarrassment and a stain on your commitment to your school.
Get out and support these guys, as well as the other men and women who represent your school.
