One may ask, what are the reasons why stress reduction is so important?

Well, in over 350,000 responses from 2000-2006, University Students in the United States identified stress as the top impediment to academic success.

With that being said, it's no wonder why our incoming students here at the University of Rhode Island identified stress as their third most concerning personal issue.

With stress being such a prevalent feeling among our students, it's very important that students are aware of what stress actually is and its effect on the body.

Stress is the perception of a threat or your body's responses to demands made upon it. Stress is a universal emotion, though the cause, of course, is different for each person.

Too much stress can be destructive to one's mind, body and spirit. How you react to your stress is essential. The most important relationship you can have is one with yourself.

Having a healthy relationship with ones self is crucial to managing your stress. Stress, if not handled appropriately and allowed to persist, can directly lead to many physical ailments including anxiety, high blood pressure, depression, ulcers, migraines, and insomnia. Most importantly, how the body reacts to stress can be blocked by learnt responses.

With this brief background in mind, why not come take advantage of an extremely helpful and important opportunity? The SpeakEasy drop in center is the perfect place to come Take a Break. Take a Break is a great opportunity to unwind while engaging in a relaxing environment.

In my experience of being a student here, I have always wanted a place to just chill, and now we can!

Whether you drop in for a few minutes to just unwind or come read a magazine and enjoy a cup of tea, you will be able to relax your mind!

So for all you URI students that feel like you just need to take a break, well now you can! Drop in anytime Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union room 135! I look forward to seeing you there!
