02/26/09 - Former University of Rhode Island basketball player, Lazare Adingono, was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly beating his four-year-old son with a belt last month.
Adingono, an assistant coach of the Canisius College men's basketball team, was arrested on Feb. 10 and charged with felony assault and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. According to Buffalo police reports, on Jan. 15 at approximately 8 a.m. Adingono allegedly beat his son with a belt, leaving welts and bruises on the neck, back and arms of the child. Adingono's wife Maureen and their son left for Providence, their former home after they moved three years ago, shortly after the incident where the boy was taken to Westerly Hospital and was treated, according to Michael De-George, Buffalo police spokesman.
The hospital alerted Rhode Island authorities of the report and they immediately contacted the Buffalo Police Department. The Buffalo police opened an investigation, which led to Adingono's arrest, De-George said.
Adingono played for the Rams from 2000-2003 and was an assistant coach under current URI head coach Jim Baron, who was not available for comment.
He is also a native of Cameroon and uncle to former URI point guard Parfait Bitee. Adingono was released on $50, 000 bail.
