02/27/09 - Now accepting applications for the Fall 2009 Civic Engagement Leaders! Are you interested in building character and leadership skills while becoming a role model for first year students? How would you like to earn three CSV 302 credits while making a difference in our local, national and global communities?
If any of this is of interest to you then you should consider applying to be part of the dynamic, fun and rewarding Civic Engagement Leader team.
A Civic Engagement Leader (formerly known as a Service Learning Mentor) is a responsible, attentive, motivated student who works with the URI 101 classes through the Feinstein Enriching America Program to engage first year students with the larger URI community and local Rhode Island community agencies. Each CEL will have a focus on one of five areas including human services, environment, education, health, and business. CELs will help run civic engagement projects and experiences with the direction of the service interns who are also student leaders within the Feinstein Center for Service Learning. This new program will help connect URI students with other involvement and engagement opportunities on campus and in the community.
Past CELs have said, "The best part of my experience was realizing what I really am capable of. You get to meet so many great people and learn so much about our great community. Without even realizing it you will become a role model and leader the entire class will look up to."
And "I also learned about the causes that strike a passion in me and others. I got to work with many different people and what I learned from being a CEL can be applied to all aspects of my education."
Becoming a CEL is a great way to enhance your resume, meet other engaged student leaders and make a difference in the community. The Feinstein Enriching America Program cannot run without these amazing leaders and we need you to join the team! All are welcome to apply. We only ask that you bring a positive attitude, motivation, and enthusiasm for service and civic engagement. If you have yet to get involved on campus this is a great way to start.
If you are interested, you can pick up an application in Roosevelt Hall Room 125 (Clearinghouse for Volunteers) or you can e-mail us at cfv@etal.uri.edu. You can also come by and chat with one of the service interns to see if becoming a CEL is the right fit for you.
