Men and women's track compete at New England Championships

03/06/09 - Qualified members of the University of Rhode Island men and women's track and field teams traveled to Boston last weekend to compete in the New England Championships.
The men's team finished fourth in a very competitive field, behind the University of Connecticut, University of New Hampshire and University of Massachusetts Lowell.
"The meet was really intense," freshman runner Pat Porteus said. "Our team really stepped up and performed well."
In the 500-meter run, sophomores David Kennedy and Nick Sanborn were the top two finishers, running at times of 1:03.36 and 1:03.41 respectively.
"The two of them ran a great race," Pat Porteus said. "They set a great example for the rest of the team."
Kennedy also participated in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 22.32.
"It was amazing," junior Ryan Best said of the meet.
The Rams had two top-eight finishers in the 55-meter hurtles: junior Brian Alexander (fourth place) and senior Alex Reid (sixth place). Their times were 7.81 and 7.84 respectively.
Freshmen Nicholas Guscott and Justin Ellison each posted top-eight finishes in their respective races. Guscott ran the 55-meter dash, finishing sixth with a time of 6.44. Ellison took eighth in the 1,000-meter run, clocking a time of 2:30.60.
In the field, junior Tyler Adams and sophomore Jacob Keeling each competed in the shot put, finishing seventh and eighth respectively.
Junior Michael Elliot tied for third in the long jump with his leap of 6-6.
The women's team also finished fourth, behind the University of Connecticut, Northeastern University and the University of New Hampshire.
"It was a great meet," freshman standout Kalyn Sheehan said. "It was nice to see everyone doing their best."
Sheehan set a school record for the 400-meter dash, finishing third with a time of 56.09.
Sheehan was also part of the 4X400 team alongside senior Ashley Robinson, junior Shayna Daugherty and sophomore Najila Singleton-McKinnon. The team finished first with a winning time of 3:46.95.
"We took three seconds off of our personal best time," Sheehan said. "The atmosphere was great, our entire team was cheering us on."
Junior Ananda Fraser leapt a season-best 40 feet in the triple jump, winning the event.
Senior TyLynn Graham helped the Rams out in multiple events, finishing third in the high jump (5 feet 7 inches) and sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.44 seconds).
Individuals from the men's team will compete in the IC4A Championships this weekend against teams from all over the country.
The women's team will send several qualified individuals to the ECAC Championships this weekend.
"There are six of us going," Sheehan said. "We are al very excited to be going. It will be great to be running against some of the best competition in the country."
