Editorial: Editor's note

03/31/09 -The Cigar editorial board doesn't typically sign its daily editorials, but this is a special occasion.
I'm sure you've noticed by now (unless you're one of those people that skips the front page and goes straight for the sports or entertainment) that the Good Five-Cent Cigar looks a little bit different today. What you see, and will be seeing from now on, is the Cigar 2.0 - with a bit of a facelift, if you will - and a more professional touch.
The front page will now contain a navigational bar, with a table of contents, a small nickel brief of the day and an ever-reliable weather prediction (since Channel 10 meteorologist Gary Ley isn't around anymore, we've decided to pick up where he left off.) Today is supposed to be quite mild, in case you were wondering.
We're also in the process of upgrading the entertainment and sports sections with more box scores, statistics and local happenings. Our news, sports and entertainment departments all have separate e-mails, so if you have any feedback or requests for coverage, feel free to direct them to the appropriate department. Our editors are always looking for riveting content for their sections.
But perhaps the most noticeable change will be the absence of one esteemed Potter Stewart, or as you might know him, the cat that tends to lounge around page five and seven every once in a while. He is not only the beloved pet of the chairwoman of the URI journalism department, but also serves as the newspaper's furry mascot, frozen in frames advertising our meetings and open positions.
While he may make the occasional appearance in the paper or on our Web site, for the most part, he will steer clear of most of our news pages unless he finds them physically useful for napping or playtime.
Our Web site has also seen some improvements, with a new message board, Twitter and the PDF version of the paper posted online this year. Breaking news alerts will also be "tweeted" in addition to being e-mailed, and a sports blog is slated to be a new addition to the Web site in the fall.
All of the changes to the site were made because we thought it was time to, well, keep up with the times.
Newspapers are fading away around us, with some closing their doors while others are transferring content to more engaging multimedia-driven Web sites. But the Cigar stands apart from many of the average daily papers, as most college newspapers do, because it serves a higher purpose - you. Our obligation is to bring interesting and objective news to the forefront of the University of Rhode Island community, and as long as the need for reporting the news exists, the Cigar will be there in whatever form to serve that purpose.
