Volunteer for Shadow Day

04/02/09 - College Crusade of Rhode Island is a nonprofit organization that works with children from the cities of Rhode Island to help decrease high school dropout rates and promote higher education.
The University of Rhode Island has worked with College Crusade for a number of years and had several "Discovery Days." This fall, URI 101 students went on a scavenger hunt and a football game with 35 seventh and eighth graders.
We invited the College Crusade of RI to URI for a Shadow Day on April 15 where 40 children will actually attend college classes with URI students. Each URI volunteer will be paired up with one to two children to take to a few classes, go to lunch and participate in an interactive scavenger hunt throughout campus. This is a great volunteer opportunity for education majors or people who just enjoy working with children.
There are opportunities for morning, afternoon or all day shifts. The morning shift is either from 10 to noon or 10 to 1 p.m. This is when the students will be attending class and lunch so it is preferred to have a class and a block for lunch.
The afternoon shift is from 1 to 3 p.m., and this will include the interactive scavenger hunt throughout campus, so the children will not be attending class at this time. If this interests you, please e-mail Corrine.hawes@gmail.com or visit the Clearinghouse for Volunteers in Roosevelt Hall room 125 to fill out a volunteer form.
