04/02/09 - The Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education officially announced the three finalists to succeed current University of Rhode Island president Robert L. Carothers Tuesday.
Carothers will step down from his position on June 30.
According to a press release from the RIBGHE, "the finalists are Sona Karentz Andrews, provost, vice president for academic affairs and professor of geosciences at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho; David M. Dooley, provost, vice president for academic affairs and professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Montana State University in Bozeman, [Mont.] and Robert D. Newman, dean of the college of humanities, associate vice president for interdisciplinary studies and professor of English at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah."
"I think it is important to note that all three finalists not only have strong academic and administrative backgrounds, but also strong research backgrounds as well," RIBGHE Board Chair Frank Caprio said in the release. "It will be important for the next president of URI to continue to strengthen the quality of student learning and to develop a focused plan for the advancement of research at our state's flagship university. I am delighted at the high quality of these three finalists and I am confident that the research agenda at URI will be well served by whichever individual the board selects as the university's next president."
The three finalists will be spending a day and a half at URI some time this month. The dates have yet to be announced.
