04/02/09 - The University of Rhode Island men's rugby team will be holding several events throughout its spring season in order to cut down costs for a team trip to Ireland in the spring of 2010.

Organizing the event for the team is freshman Kevin Christofaro.

"It will be nice to see Ireland and all it has to offer," Christofaro said. "It will be even better to play against such talented competition."

The team plans on touring Ireland as well as playing games against several local teams.

Head coach Nate Godfrey contacted several teams in Ireland to set up the tournament.

"There are many teams in Ireland that agreed to play against us," Christofaro said. "They will be very tough games, but very helpful."

Ireland is well known for its success in the sport of rugby, which is one of the country's most popular sports.

"Ireland is best in the world in rugby," Christofaro said. "The team is really excited for the experience."

It will certainly be no easy task for the team to fund this trip, as costs are adding up to be around $1,200 per person.

"We have a lot of work to do," Christofaro said. "As of right now, it will be pretty expensive for us, but we are looking to find something a little bit cheaper."

The team hopes to talk to alumni to schedule a fundraising dinner. They also plan to sell T-shirts and bracelets to cut costs for the trip.

"We are trying to schedule an alumni rugby game with a barbecue following it to try and make some money," Christofaro said.

Godfrey has played overseas in the past, and thinks it would be a great experience for his team.

"Coach told me all about his experiences playing in Europe," Christofaro said. "I took what he told me and ran with it. I showed all the guys, and they are all very excited."

For many players on the team, this trip would be a dream come true. The team is still looking for ideas to get money and is open to suggestions.

"We know that we can put together enough money to make this trip work," Christofaro said. "The trip will be great to further us as a team, and we really look forward to it."
