04/03/09 - The coaching staff of the University of Rhode Island's track and field team prepared the team for success in its first outdoor meet of the year--and it worked.

The "annual plan," was the key to victory in last weeks Bryant Invitational said head coach John Copeland. "Our coaching staff works from an annual plan that we develop during the summer and fall to meet the needs of our current team."

Copeland added, "Training intensities, training volume and rest periods are all included in that plan. Workout plans are developed to coincide with the annual plan."

The team had seven first places, in the 100 meter dash, 110 meter hurdles, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, high jump, shot put and the discus throw.

"Changes in weekly training may be a result of shortcomings from last week or to better prepare the athletes for upcoming Championships meets", Copeland said about his team's preparation.

Freshman Nick Guscott took first place in the 100-meter dash while running into a strong wind, with a time of 11.15 seconds.

Freshman Greg Dean won the high jump of 1.88 meters, which edged the second place score of 1.83 meters. Dean was Rhode Island's best long jumper during the indoor season.

Rams junior Brian Alexander won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.28 and sophomore David Kennedy won both his events. Kennedy's time in the 200-meter dash was 22.41 seconds, and also the 400-meter dash in 48.66 seconds.

Rhode Island dominated 16 event, taking first, second and third place in the shot put. Junior Tyler Adams took the event with a throw of 15.76 meters. Freshman Cory Thalheimer and sophomore Jacob Keeling respectively took second and third place. Thalheimer had a score of 15.05 meter and Keeling's score was 14.64 meters.

With a first place finish in the shot put, Adams also finished in second place behind teammate junior Derek Peterson in the discus throw with a score of 44.69 meters. Peterson qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in NC in late May with his discus score.
